In December 2004, a large number of web pages in the defacement by the Santy worm, exploit security holes phpBB to re-write the PHP scripts and HTML.
Because of this, security at the phpBB doubt. However, the phpBB Group can quickly respond to reports of security and immediately release the new version. Many things have been changed to avoid problems that will come. One is the re-authentication in the administrator panel (introduced after verification of the cookies can cause the attacker gets administrator privileges), a visual confirmation (CHAPTCHA)to avoid automatic registration by bots, as well as the substitution code that cause security problems in version 2.0.10 to 2.0.15. To stay safe, administrators are expected to be renewed with the most recent version as soon as possible. CAPTCHA system still proved to be bypassed by a bot with the occurrence of cases of spam on some phpBB forums using bots.
On 20 November 2005, phpBB Group announces the formation of Incident Investigation Team, a sub section of the Support Team, which is responsible to assist the user in handling and repair as well as investigating reports of security holes that exist. The team announced a tracker in January next in which the administrator of the bulletin board that can be attacked to report the attack and had the support of this Incident Investigation Team.
